A Closer Look at eBay's Bloom-Powered Data Center

Last week eBay went live with a new data center power design that abandons diesel generators and UPS units in favor of Bloom Energy fuel cells powered by natural gas. The Utah facility is using 30 Bloom Energy Servers as the primary power source for its entire IT load, using the utility grid for backup power should the Bloom units fail. Until now, data centers using Bloom boxes (like Apple) have used them for supplemental energy while retaining traditional UPS units and generators for emergency power. In this video, eBay VP of Global Foundation Services Dean Nelson and Bloom VP of Mission Critical Services Peter Gross discuss the new data center, how it came about and what it means.
