Terremark Worldwide (TMRK) has begun construction of the second data center facility at its NAP of the Capital Region (NCR) campus in Culpeper, Virginia, the company said today, citing "substantial demand" from Federal government agencies and large enterprise customers.
Terremark said it has contracts in place to fill 30 percent of the second facility, which will share the 50,000 square foot footprint of the initial data center building at the site, which is located about 60 miles south of Washington, DC. The company said it has contracts for 80 percent of the space in the first building, and a "robust pipeline" for its disaster recovery, managed hosting and Enterprise Cloud services.
"With the first datacenter almost completely sold out much quicker than we anticipated and a significant portion of the second facility already committed, we believe the strategic decision to begin construction of the second datacenter at the NCR will have a very positive impact on our future growth and returns," said Manuel Medina, Terremark's Chairman and CEO.
"Our ability to consistently provide Federal customers with reliable, world-class IT infrastructure solutions from an ultra-secure datacenter campus continues to be a key differentiator for our company," said Medina. "This expertise has proven to be a major factor in the NCR's success in attracting both Federal and enterprise customers, as demonstrated by the continued strength of our pipeline."
The NAP of the Capital Region will open with two 30-megawatt power feeds from Rappahannock Electric Cooperative, and in the fall will add a third 30-megawatt feed from Dominion Virginia Power. Each of the five planned 50,000 square foot data centers at the site will be supported by 11 Caterpillar 2.25 megawatt generators, for a total of 55 generators once the campus is completed. To support those generators, the NAP of the Capital Region can store up to 520,000 gallons of diesel fuel on site.
