After a few rough economic years, 2010 marked the beginning of trend toward serious data center transformation efforts for many data center operators. Economic pressures over the last few years have prevented some organization from making needed IT investments. However, 2010 did show signs of an improving economy and research firm like Garter have predicted increases in IT spending for 2010 and for that trend to continue in 2011.
And much of that data center transformation spending will be designated for virtualization efforts. “IT departments battered by the global recession last year are increasingly adopting a ‘virtualize first’ mentality,” says a 2010 eWEEK article. Unfortunately, legacy servers lack flexibility and have limited I/O and memory capacity, and thus cannot scale to meet the new demands of the business. The bottom line: Coming out of the global recession, businesses are looking to virtualize the servers that they’re buying. Analysts say businesses are seeing not only the immediate benefits of virtualization, including cost savings and consolidation, but also understand that the technology is an important step as they transform their data centers to become more flexible and capable of meeting new business requirements.
