Texas fiber network operator Alpheus Communications has bought Aspen Communications, a Dallas-based colocation and hosting provider, including Aspen's data center facilities in Dallas, Fort Worth and Bryan/College Station.
"Customers are seeing the advantages of moving costly server and storage functions into facilities that have redundant power, adequate cooling, and proximity to a quality network," said Stephen Crawford, Senior Vice President for Mergers & Acquisitions at Alpheus. "We have always owned the network, and now we are putting these state-of-the-art data center facilities at the edges."
Aspen was created in 2001 through the partnership of Dallas based telecommunications entrepreneur James Chiles and Atlantic Pearl Investments, which developed the Univision Plaza carrier hotel at 2323 Bryan in Dallas. Aspen's data centers are typically located within carrier hotels, including facilities in Dallas (2323 Bryan, 901 Main), Fort Worth (307 W. 7th Street), Bryan/College Station (120 Main), and El Paso/Juarez (6842 Industrial/7930 Thomas Fernandez Blvd).
"This acquisition gives Alpheus a tremendous platform to serve enterprise level customers," added Paul Hobby Chairman and CEO of Alpheus. "You hear a lot about convergence in the telecommunications industry, and this deal illustrates the next form of inevitable convergence: telecommunications and information technology services. Alpheus' telecommunications network, our Metrolocity multi-carrier peering product, and Aspen's data center capabilities are a very powerful combination for clients who want a robust network standing behind their outsourced information technology requirements."
Aspen will be integrated immediately into Alpheus and will adopt the Alpheus name.
