It's been quite a month for American Power Conversion, one of the leading vendors of products for the data center industry. On Sept. 12 APC announced that it received the highest score in CIO Magazine's inaugural Vendor Report Card survey, finishing ahead of Cisco, AMD, Intel and Adobe. This week APC was named number three overall in the annual Information Week 500, which recognizes innovation in the IT industry. Information Week's profile of APC focused on its customer service efforts:

It's all about the customer these days at American Power Conversion. The manufacturer of power supply products has focused during the last 12 months on technology projects that improve processes for its customers and internal users. "We want to know as much information about customers that we can possibly get," says APC CIO Brian Belliveau, who took over the job in July from longtime CIO Doug Rademacher, who's leaving the company to pursue his dream of becoming a math and science teacher. "It's not only about being a supplier but a trusted business partner and adviser for customers to solve real business problems."

The InformationWeek 500 "spotlights the power of innovation in business technology, rather than simply identifying the biggest IT spenders," the magazine says, with companies with at least $500 million in annual revenue invited to participate (APC"s revenue is $1.98 billion).

In the 2006 Vendor Report Card survey, conducted by CIO in late spring, more than 1,000 CIO readers ranked APC the number one IT vendor, out of a total of 58 companies, based on a series of performance factors. Survey respondents rated APC the top IT vendor based on performance areas such as product quality and reliability; after sale support; and the ability to deliver on promises and deadlines. The survey also noted that more than 85 percent of CIOs were willing to recommend APC to other IT executives, second only to Cisco Systems.

Founded in 1981, American Power Conversion offers a wide variety of products for network-critical physical infrastructure including its InfraStruXure architecture for on-demand data centers. Headquartered in West Kingston, Rhode Island, APC reported sales of $2 billion for the year ended December 31, 2005.
