Monsanto Co. is among those deciding to build rather than buy. The company will spend $21 million to build a 40,000-square-foot data center on the west side of its campus near St. Louis, the biotechnology company said recently. A Monsanto site search team worked for seven months to find the best solution for upgrading the current data center, the company said. They found that it would have cost 20 percent more to renovate the existing data center in Monsanto's G building than to build a new facility with the 17-foot ceilings desired in a modern center, said Lori Fisher, a Monsanto spokeswoman.
