The OpenStack Summit wrapped up last week in Austin, and amid the flurry of announcements, it seems that there were several questions that kept popping up.
OpenStack took the opportunity on Wednesday to answer five of the most common questions that it heard in Austin in a blog post written by OpenStack VP of marketing and community services Lauren Sell.
Among the questions was whether OpenStack is competing with public clouds.
“Pitting OpenStack private cloud against AWS public cloud is wrong on a couple of levels,” Sell said. “On the one hand, it’s a good sign that folks think OpenStack is winning the private cloud race, but on the other hand it means they don’t see OpenStack at the table with public cloud providers.”
Sell said that enterprises will be taking a multi-cloud approach where they combine a variety of cloud-types: private, hyperscale public and specialized public clouds.
It’s already common for enterprises to use OpenStack and AWS together, Sell said, and OpenStack expects this trend to continue to grow along with the rise of multi-cloud environments.
“Using OpenStack private cloud and AWS is a common use case, as is using OpenStack private cloud + AWS + OpenStack public clouds, or simply OpenStack public + private clouds, and there are many more patterns...all being done today,” Sell said.
Companies like Internap and DreamHost both recently launched public clouds, Sell notes, and in Europe, OVH launched its public cloud services in November 2015. A full list of public clouds powered by OpenStack is available on its website.
In addressing another common question - whether OpenStack is “only for big companies with large teams of people who run it themselves” – Sell said that over the last six months it has seen “dozens of mid-sized organizations coming on board.”
Findings from a recent OpenStack user survey implied that OpenStack is most popular in medium-sized organizations as the strong majority of OpenStack clouds support between 10- and 999 users.
