SunGard Expands its Atlanta Data Centers

Disaster recovery specialist SunGard Availability Services is expanding its data centers in Atlanta and Smyrna, Ga. to meet growing customer demand for colocation and managed services, the company said today.

The SunGard midtown Atlanta facility is getting a power upgrade designed to support an additional 350 cabinets of IT space for customers. The upgrade includes adding 2.5 megawatts in utility power, doubling the facility's capacity. The infrastructure will also gain an additional two megawatt generator, one megawatt in UPS power and 300 tons of cooling capacity.

In Smyrna, SunGard will add 25,000 square feet of raised floor for colocation and managed services. The project will also add six megawatts of utility power, improve power redundancy by adding power feeds from separate utility substations), and boost cooling capacity by 700 tons.

The Atlanta projects continue a series of significant expansions for SunGard Availability's colocation and managed services business, which recently announced plans to open a new data center in Sacramento, Calif. and leased a major new Philadelphia data center last year.

The 134,800 square foot Smyrna site will support SunGard recovery services, including SunGard AdvancedRecovery solutions, which deliver high availability using replication and disk-based backup technologies. The facility includes business continuity office space with more than 300 seats for client staff needing off-site workspace after an outage.

SunGard has 35 managed services facilities with a combined total of over five million square feet of data centers in North America and Europe, and a dedicated global network backbone.
