Telehouse today announced the official opening of Telehouse West, its £80 million ($121 million) new flagship data centre facility. The nine-floor, 160,000 square foot facility in the Docklands is the first large chunk of new data centre space to come online in the city of London in several years. Telehouse West features multiple efficiency features designed to meet the city's new sustainable building code.
Telehouse West is the 35th data centre for Telehouse, whose global footprint now spans 119,000m² (about 1.28 million square feet) and extends beyond the UK and America to Vietnam and South Africa. The facility offers connectivity to over 400 ISPs, carriers, operators and Internet Exchanges, and brings the total power at the company’s London Docklands campus to 40MVA.
Limited Supply in London
London is historically one of the world’s tightest markets for data center supply. Recent data center construction projects in London have focused outside the city center, where space and power are more readily available.
“With space at a premium in the capital there has been a high level of interest in new facility," said Michelle Reid, Sales and Marketing Director for Telehouse. "Currently our customer tours of Telehouse West are in high demand as organizations look to secure space in the new facility."
The Greater London Authority has approved a plan in which waste heat from Telehouse West will be reused in a district heat network for the local Docklands community. The project is expected to produce up to nine megawatts of power for the local community, and allow the facility to reduce its carbon footprint by 1,110 tons.
CRC Looms Large for Customers
The district heating plan is a key component of a design that aims to help customers meet their sustainability commitments under the UK's forthcoming Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) legislation.
"We designed Telehouse West with the forthcoming CRC legislation in mind," said Reid. "The opening of the facility will not only help customers achieve their own green targets by reducing the amount of carbon allowances they will need to purchase, but also enable them to expand their businesses and launch new services as they see fit."
Telehouse has two existing data centers in the Docklands, with 300,000 square feet of data centre space housing more than 700 telecoms and colocation service providers. Telehouse West is part of a global expansion of Telehouse facilities to meet surging demand for data center space from its clients in the financial and telecom industries.
