Dedicated hosting specialist The Planet has begun an expansion that will add 12,000 square feet to the company's newest Dallas data center operations. The expansion at the Dallas D6 data center is scheduled to open in November, and will bring The Planet's total data center footprint to 167,000 square feet.
The Planet's decision to start the expansion is a sign that the company doesn't believe that its growth will be slowed by lengthy downtime related to an explosion and fire that damaged one of the company's Houston facilities, resulting in lengthy downtime for thousands of customers.
The new space will focus on energy efficient design, including a hot aisle containment system to keep hot and cold air separate within the data center. The Planet will use CPI (Chatsworth Products Inc.) ducted exhaust cabinets, and use the plenum space above the ceiling as a return air path to the computer room air conditioning (CRAC) units.
"As energy costs continue to climb, operating our data centers at peak performance is absolutely critical, both to our company and to our customers," said The Planet's Vice President of Facilities Jeff Lowenberg. "Our goal is to use best practices and a practical approach to optimize our operations."
The company operates six data centers, with four located in Dallas and two in Houston.
