Construction work is underway on V2, the second Vantage Data Centers building on its Santa Clara, Calif. campus.
Vantage Data Centers has announced the start of construction on V2, the company's second data center on its campus in Santa Clara, Calif. V2 will provide data center modules designed to scale the facility from 9 to 18 megawatts, allowing customers to request more power without any additional construction, moving of equipment or service disruption. The new data center is expected to come online in late 2011.
Vantage built and commissioned its first Santa Clara data center, a 6 megawatt facility known as V3, in less than six months from the start of construction.Vantage says its V2 data center will utilize a 400/230V distribution to the rack with no PDU’s. It also will feature a “penthouse” cooling tier that drops cool air into the server area. Vantage expects to be able to use fresh air cooling for 65 to 80 percent of the year. Vantage is also using “zig-zag” transformer technology to further improve efficiency compared to conventional single phase distribution systems at 240V or 277V.
"The typical data center operator doesn’t focus primarily on the business needs of the Enterprise IT Units or on creating a means for IT departments to positively contribute to the bottom line," said Jim Trout, chief executive officer (CEO) of Vantage Data Centers. "Most data centers are built with the mentality of a real estate landlord. At Vantage we see ourselves as a partner helping IT organizations deal with the most expensive investments in their budget. We listened intently to customer needs and launched the industry's most advanced data center model: a campus of multiple data centers enabling IT organizations to identify savings, scale to meet corporate needs, and create efficiencies."
Vantage also announced the Apollo Innovation Initiative, a data center development framework integrating comprehensive design, project development and program management processes led by data center domain-area experts. The initiative brings together industry experts with advanced resources and technologies to create a set of customizable products and services that will be prototyped in Santa Clara and replicated at Vantage campuses around the world. Vantage's partners in the Apollo initiative include Fujitsu (PalmSecure Biometric Physical Access Control), Intelligent Building Interface System (IBIS) building management software, and Toshiba (G9000 Uninterrupted Power Supply units).
"Vantage is committed to incorporating the latest technologies and the most energy-efficient and environmentally sound products and practices into our buildings created in the best locations possible," said Trout.
