Here’s a roundup of some of this week’s headlines from the cloud computing sector:
Amazon announces Elastic Load Balancing in VPC. Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced that Elastic Load Balancing can now be used with Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (VPC). Elastic Load Balancing allows fault tolerance across multiple Amazon EC instances for responding to incoming application traffic, even if distributed across multiple Availability Zones. In conjunction with VPC, it allows for creation and management of security groups associated with your Elastic Load Balancing to provide additional networking and security options. It can also detect the health of EC2 instances. With IPv6 support forthcoming, some of the same features are now available in VPC such as SSL termination, health checks, sticky sessions, and CloudWatch monitoring. AWS also announced the availability of AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) support for AWS Elastic Beanstalk. Beanstalk allows the ability to deploy and manage applications in the AWS cloud and IAM enables management for permissions of multiple users within an AWS account.
GoGrid offers IBM DB2 in the cloud. GoGrid announced that a GoGrid Server Image with IBM DB2 database software is now available to help independent software vendors (ISVs) build DB2 powered applications on the cloud in minutes. Enhanced by new advanced billing and license management technology ISVs can provide customers with a monthly consolidated invoice that includes GoGrid's infrastructure, DB2 and any additional ISV license fees. "For our ISVs, simplifying IT infrastructure and deploying applications securely and seamlessly is a very compelling value proposition," said Mark Worsey, executive vice president of Technology, GoGrid. "Making DB2 available on the GoGrid Exchange is a great step in delivering on the real value of cloud computing. DB2 is ideally suited for cloud environments and combined with GoGrid's partner exchange platform, ISVs benefit from a seamless process for deploying DB2-based solutions rapidly while only charging their customers only for what they actually consume."
Alcatel-Lucent announces CloudBand. Alcatel-Lucent (ALU) introduced CloudBand, which combines the computing power and flexibility of the cloud with the high performance, reliability and security of communications networks. CloudBand is the foundation for a new class of carrier cloud services that will enable communications service providers to bring the benefits of the cloud to their own networks and business operations, and put them in an ideal position to offer a new range of high-performance cloud services to enterprises and consumers. The business class cloud services leverage the strength of the carrier and are delivered using secure, reliable, high-performance communications networks. “Service providers’ cloud investments have already exceeded $11 billion in 2011, but financial rewards will only come if their computing and network assets are tightly integrated, said Camille Mendler, Telecommunications Analyst at Informa. "Orchestration platforms like Alcatel-Lucent’s CloudBand support efficient consumption and control of diverse digital resources. Better control means better performance – and that’s absolutely critical to differentiate and win customers."
Wyse acquires Trellia. Wyse Technology announced it acquired privately held Trellia, a leader in cloud-based mobile infrastructure management. With the acquisition Wyse gains a suite of cloud-based mobile security, device, application and expense management software solutions. With the BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) movement in the workplace Wyse will extend its global market leadership by adding the intelligent mobile infrastructure and content management suite in the cloud. "Trellia shares Wyse's vision and passion in creating a frictionless working experience via the cloud. We will extend the benefits of software as a service (SaaS) to intelligent mobile infrastructure and content management unlike any other vendor in the market," said Tarkan Maner, President and CEO of Wyse. "Our goal is to enable enterprises, service providers and Telco’s to deliver secure infrastructure and content management from the cloud for any user, at home, at work or on-the-go. We are committed to accelerating the fast adoption of cloud client computing, while expanding Wyse's enterprise-class management, cloud and virtualization software portfolio."
