Here’s a roundup of some of this week’s headlines from the cloud computing sector:
Citrix adds Cisco, HP and Symantec Executives to Further Personal Cloud. Citrix Systems (CTXS) announced the addition of three new executive hires to drive leadership in enabling the personal cloud. Erin Hintz has joined as vice president, global marketing and ecommerce, Online Services Division; Shankar Iyer as vice president of product management, Receiver and End-user Services; and Bob Schultz, as group vice president and general manager, Enterprise Desktops and Applications. All three industry veterans will be based at the company’s newly expanded Silicon Valley headquarters. Erin Hintz comes to Citrix from Symantec, Shankar Iyer from the WebEx division of Cisco, and Bob Schultz from HP. "Citrix is leading desktop transformation as evidenced by our customer success, market recognition and ongoing innovation. I’m excited to be joining this visionary team to further our leadership and success in enabling customers to deliver desktops as a service," said Bob Schultz.
VCE helps Government Agencies embrace the cloud. VCE, the Virtual Computing Environment Company, announced its support for the TechAmerica Federal CLOUD2 Commission report which was released Tuesday in Washington D.C. at the National Press Club. The commission is a group of over 70 thought leaders from industry, government and academia brought together to generate recommendations for accelerating adoption of cloud technologies in the U.S. Government. "Cloud Computing is transforming the IT landscape," said Michael Capellas, Chairman and CEO of VCE and Co-Chair of the Commission. "I am proud to say that the Commission really took this mission seriously. In the end, we clearly identified barriers to cloud adoption and recommended a set of actions that are certain to drive efficiencies and increased security into Federal Infrastructure, which ultimately will drive US job growth and further position US technology leadership in cloud computing."
SIIA presses for self-regulated cloud computing. In a 27 page white paper the SIIA (Software and Information Industry Association) delivered a guide to Cloud Computing for Policymakers, aimed at self-regulation instead of government rules. The paper states that for the purposes of policy making "there is no such thing as 'the cloud', and that there is no need for cloud-specific legislation or regulations." They contend that taking such actions for attempting to grow cloud computing could actually impede the potential of cloud computing. The paper also states that better security is achieved with cloud computing, as it provides an environment inherently superior for applying many critical security measures. The paper closes with seven key principles for policymakers to consider and six cloud computing myths debunked.
