Here’s our review of some of this week’s noteworthy links for the data center industry:
EMC acquires XtremIO. EMC announced that it has acquired privately held XtremIO. Israel-based XtremIO is a flash storage pioneer and has a scale-out, enterprise storage architecture designed to leverage the speed and unique abilities of Flash memory. XtremIO technology will complement the range of EMC Flash-based systems and software stemming from EMC's early entry into the Flash storage market. XtremIO won a 2012 Green Enterprise IT award from the Uptime Institute for IT Product Deployment. "XtremIO brings to EMC amazing technology with a fantastic team that's captured praise from early-view customers and many of the industry's foremost thinkers," said Pat Geisinger, President and Chief Operating Officer at EMC Information Infrastructure Products. "We fully expect XtremIO technology, once introduced to market, to have a tremendous impact on our customer's ability to leverage the unique advantages of all-Flash storage across many of their most demanding applications." Additional details about the acquisition will be provided at EMC World, held May 21-24 at the Venetian in Las Vegas.
HP moves Cloud Services to Public Beta. As announced previously, HP moved its cloud services into public beta Thursday. The first applications to be offered under the pay-as-you-go model as a publicly available beta service will be HP Cloud Compute, HP Cloud Object Storage and HP Cloud Content Delivery Network. Designed with OpenStack technology HP Cloud Services offer a public cloud infrastructure along with platform services and cloud solutions. An ecosystem of partners is a step along the path to an HP Cloud Services Marketplace, where customers will be able to access HP Cloud Services and partner solutions through a single account. "Whether you are an independent developer, ISV or the CIO of a major organization, the priority is to design your applications for today’s cloud economy,” said Zorawar ‘Biri’ Singh, senior vice president and general manager, Cloud Services, HP. “We will continue to build, integrate and deploy developer-focused features, designed to support a world-class cloud that enables our customers and partners to run and operate web services at scale, on a global basis.”
Riverbed Whitewater supports HP Cloud Services. Riverbed Technologies (RVBD) announced that the Whitewater family of cloud storage gateway solutions now support HP Cloud Object Storage, one of the HP Cloud Services. Organizations that deploy Whitewater gateways can now choose HP Cloud Object Storage as a cloud storage option to meet their requirements for disaster recovery. Whitewater gateways deduplicate, compress and encrypt data to reduce storage costs in the cloud. "Deploying Whitewater gateways with HP Cloud Services enables organizations to eliminate the administrative burden and costs associated with tape technology. Now HP Cloud Services can become a low cost storage tier for backup data sets," said Ray Villeneuve, general manager of the Whitewater Business Unit at Riverbed. "The Whitewater gateway's real-time replication greatly improves DR readiness, streamlines IT operations, and delivers the performance, security and reliability that customers desire. Customers that deploy Whitewater gateways with HP Cloud Services benefit from fast and easy installation, no changes to the existing infrastructure and world-class support and service."
