The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is embracing cloud computing and will use Terremark's Enterprise Cloud platform to host its web site, the agency said today. The move is part of a broader effort by the FCC to improve its online services to citizens, which will include a comprehensive redesign of FCC.gov and its online systems.

The Enterprise Cloud provides the FCC with on-demand access to computing resources delivered through an Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)  platform that is certified to meet the requirements of the Federal Information Security Managements Act (FISMA). Terremark's cloud computing solution will make a direct, secure connection with dedicated servers housed in the FCC's data center.

The announcement is the latest high-profile government win for Terremark, a Miami-based provider of managed hosting and cloud computing services. The USA.gov and Data.gov web sites are already hosted on the Enterprise Cloud.

"The FCC's selection of the Enterprise Cloud serves as further validation of the compelling value Terremark's cloud computing solutions provide our federal customers," said Bruce Hart, COO of Terremark Federal Group. "With various federal government agencies leveraging our ultra-secure and highly scalable cloud platform to meet their real-time IT infrastructure needs, Terremark continues to distinguish itself as the cloud computing leader in the federal market. Our proven ability to comply with the highest security standards while delivering leading-edge IaaS solutions designed to fulfill each customer's specific requirements ideally positions our company to further benefit from the U.S. government's increasing adoption of cloud computing."

Perhaps the most important factor in the growth of Terremark’s federal business has been Terremark’s decision to build the NAP of the Capital Region, the company’s $250 million data center campus in Culpeper, Virginia. Terremark also benefits from its status as an approved colocation provider by the General Services Administration.
