Stack Is Building a 216MW Data Center Campus in Virginia

American data center operator Stack Infrastructure has stared development of a huge campus in Ashburn, Northern Virginia – the world’s most popular data center location.

The 80-acre site codenamed 'NVAL2' will eventually offer up to 216MW of critical power across three buildings, totaling nearly 1 million square feet.

The first phase of construction is expected to finish in the third quarter of 2023.

“Our clients seek speed, scale, quality, and partnership. This new flagship campus exemplifies that,” said Brian Cox, CEO at Stack.

Doubling down

Stack Infrastructure is headquartered in Denver, Colorado, and offers a wide range of services – from powered shell data centers and wholesale colocation down to private data suites.

It operates facilities in 10 locations across the US, including existing data centers in Northern Virginia, located in Ashburn and Prince William County. The latter is undergoing its second expansion, with additional capacity expected to come online at the end of 2022.

“Stack’s development team continues to leverage its relationships with utilities, local authorities, and developer partners to establish a strong, scalable presence in critical markets like Northern Virginia, despite land and power scarcity,” said Tim Hughes, VP of Strategy and Development at Stack.

“Dedication to our clients has driven Stack to secure campus-scale sites and electrical interconnections to allow hyperscalers and enterprises continuous expansion in key markets.”

According to the announcement, the new campus in Ashburn will be powered by electricity from 100% renewable sources, supplied by Dominion Energy. Dominion hasn’t always seen eye to eye with data center operators; the validity of its renewable energy programs was previously questioned by industry heavyweights including Equinix, QTS, and Microsoft.
