Ex-eBay Data Center Engineering Chief Eddie Schutter Named Switch CTO

Data center provider Switch has named Eddie Schutter, who used to lead data center and network engineering at eBay, its CTO.

A long-time data center professional, Schutter headed data center and network architecture, engineering, and operations for the online-auction giant for more than two years before leaving last October. Prior to that, he spent many years in various technology and infrastructure leadership positions at AT&T.

Adam Kramer, Switch’s executive VP of strategy, confirmed Schutter’s appointment but declined further comment.

Based in Las Vegas, Switch builds massive data center campuses around the US, providing mostly retail colocation and interconnection services. Schutter’s former employer eBay is Switch’s largest customer, contributing 11 percent of revenue as of the end of last year.

After years of operating as a private company, Switch went public in 2017, raising $531 million in one of the year’s largest tech IPOs. The successful float was followed by a rough 7 months for the company’s stock, which on Thursday traded 40 percent below its IPO-day price of about $21 per share.
