It's been a busy week for the content delivery business. In addition to earnings from Akamai (AKAM), there was news from Level 3 (LVLT), Limelight Networks (LLNW), CacheLogic and CDNetworks:

  • Level 3 said it will provide live video and content delivery services for the Democratic National Convention in Denver Aug. 25-28. Level 3 will deliver live analog and High-Definition video broadcast services from the Pepsi Center in Denver. Level 3 is based in Broomfield, Colorado, a suburb of Denver.

  • Limelight Networks said a Massachusetts court had granted several of its pre-trial motions in patent infringement litigation with Akamai, while ruling in Akamai's favor in several others. The streamlined case, which now focuses on whether Limelight infringed a single Akamai patent, is scheduled to go to trial Monday.

  • CacheLogic, which operates a hybrid P2P CDN, has rebranded as Velocix. "Our new name and logo reinforce our focus on the growing expectations that consumers have as they increasingly turn to the Internet for movies, TV programs, video games and software downloads," said CEO Phill Robinson. See the press announcement for more information.

  • CDNetworks, the largest content delivery provider in Asia, announced a share repurchase plan for about $16 million. In Dec. CDNetworks raised $96 million in private investment. At the time, company officials said the funding would likely be invested in data center infrastructure, or to acquire or partner with an existing US CDN provider. Perhaps not.
