I'll admit it. I'm a sucker for a truly goofy PR stunt. So I'm helpless to resist this video promo for EMC's "Record-Breaking" storage announcements this week, in which motorcycle daredevil Bubba Blackwell attempts to jump his motorcycle over 40 EMC Symmetrix storage units. While EMC missed the opportunity to integrate explosions into this stunt, we're impressed by the multiple product promo placements. In the spirit of the event,we'll make a couple of technical observations: parking lots typically don't make ideal environments for storage gear, especially in a warm climate like Miami. Alas, few data centers possess the perimeter floor space required for a motorcycle daredevil to reach 75 mph. Another challenge: many data centers lack the ceiling clearance necessary to accommodate a flying motorcyle. The risk of daredevil-ductwork collisions would be high. So don't try this in your data center! Will Bubba make it? You know you want to look.
