Fortune Data Centers says the efficiency initiatives in its Oregon data center have will bring a $500,000 award from Energy Trust of Oregon. Fortune said the award for its new facility in Hillsboro, Oregon recognizes three elements of its data center design: a 99% efficient uninterruptible power supply (UPS), and the use of water-side economization and full aisle containment.
Oregon’s mild climate will enable the data center to use natural cooling methods to run the facility at least 30 percent of the year. Based on a technical review of the data center, Fortune expects these steps will help its Oregon facility to save more than 48 million kilowatt hours and reduce carbon emissions by 43 million pounds over the next 10 years. During a recent commissioning, the facility recorded a power usage effectiveness (PUE) of 1.16 when it was using economizers.
“Like other Fortune facilities, the Oregon data center benefits from state-of-the-art energy efficiency and control—including 100 percent aisle containment, as well as the ability to take advantage of Oregon’s clean and inexpensive power,” said John Sheputis, CEO of Fortune Data Centers. “The commissioning data was better than expected, demonstrating an unprecedented level of efficiency for a wholesale facility.”
In 2011, Fortune began to work with Energy Trust, an independent nonprofit organization dedicated to helping utility customers benefit from saving energy and tapping renewable resources. The group is focused on keeping energy costs as low as possible, creating jobs and building a sustainable energy future.
"Fortune is doing all the right things,"said Energy Trust Business Sector Lead Oliver Kesting, "The savings potential for new data centers is significant and Fortune has explored all possibilities to be the most efficient they can be. We had a great working relationship and are looking forward to seeing these savings in action.”
