Con Edison has now restored utility power to most of New York's major data center hubs, bringing a sense of stability after an intense week of downtime and maintenance challenges in the wake of SuperStorm Sandy.
As of this morning, key data center buildings at 60 Hudson Street and 111 8th Avenue were back on utility power, as were 121 Varick and 325 Hudson Street. Several of the hardest hit buildings remained on generator power, including 75 Broad Street, where tenants Internap, Peer 1, Zayo and FiberMedia Group were all up and running.
Datagram is now back online on after a weekend of scrambling to get replacement generators up and running. That meant that the Gawker Media blog network shifted back to its permanent servers, ending a temporary exile to the free blog host Tumblr. "Hey, Old Pre-Superstorm Sandy Gawker is Back, You Guys," Gawker informed readers. "But we're still working on transferring over some of the posts you may have missed since floodwaters came and swallowed us and relegated us to Tumblr which most people who hated the new redesign enjoyed anyway."
In Brooklyn, utility power has been restored to 882 3rd Avenue, but FiberMedia reports that it continues on generator power until the stability of the power systems can be established.
Recovery efforts continue at Verizon Enterprise, which reported " significant progress, focusing on providing work-around solutions for clients with service interruptions and re-establishing pre-Sandy service levels." Verizon said that it has pumped approximately 1 million gallons of floodwater out of its headquarters building in lower Manhattan.
"We expect to begin working to get the remaining New York City facilities up and running once power is restored," said Verizon. "Because of the corrosive nature of salt water, we expect complications with copper and fiber within these facilities. In addition last night, we restored a key New York City facility to generator power, re-establishing services for our large multinational clients."
In New Jersey, Equinix reported that its data centers in Secaucus returned to utility power on Saturday. "That means all of our sites in the New York metro area are now operating normally on utility power," the company. Virtually all New Jersey data centers were able to maintain service through Sandy-related utility outages by relying on generator power. DuPont Fabros Technology said its NJ1 data center in Piscataway returned to utility power Saturday after operating on generator power for approximately 100 hours with no downtime.
