TelecityGroup, a leading European provider of carrier-neutral data centres, announced Friday that it has acquired UK Grid, a leading UK data centre operator, for £11.7 million ($18.1 million US). The addition of UK Grid will immediately add approximately 1.5 megawatts of carrier neutral capacity to TelecityGroup’s existing footprint, with the potential for further expansion.
UK Grid operates three data centres in Manchester, where it houses 400 customers in about 50,000 square feet of space. This was TelecityGroup's second acquisition of a Manchester provider. In August 2010, TelecityGroup bought Internet Facilitators Limited (IFL), a carrier neutral data center in Manchester, UK, for £21.1million ($33.4 million US dollars).
TelecityGroup said its highly-targeted data centre expansion programme is designed to ensure its customers have the capacity to grow in the most highly-demanded European markets. "We are thrilled to announce the acquisition of UK Grid and welcome the team to TelecityGroup," said Adriaan Oosthoek, TelecityGroup’s UK Managing Director. "The demand for premium data centre capacity in the region is clear, and this acquisition will further enhance TelecityGroup’s ability to grow in this increasingly important digital and technology hub."
