At last week's 7x24 Exchange conference, UPS specialist Active Power unveiled its new CleanSource High Density (CSHD) 750 kVA flywheel UPS. A flywheel is a spinning cylinder which generates power from kinetic energy, and continues to spin when grid power is interrupted. In most data centers, the UPS system draws power from a bank of large batteries to provide "ride-through" electricity to keep servers online until the diesel generator can start up and begin powering the facility. The new Active Power unit can be extended to add a battery component, providing an additional layer of reliability.
In this video, Bernardo Mendez, UPS product line manager at Active Power, provides an overview of the product in a conversation with Data Center Knowledge editor Rich Miller. Active Power says the CleanSource High Density offers "price parity" with battery-backed alternatives, meaning users don't need to pay a premium for the flywheel, which offers a more compact footprint and a more sustainable profile than battery UPSes. This video runs about 7 minutes.
