CyrusOne announced plans to build a 340,000-square foot data center north of Dallas, one of the biggest and most active data center markets in the US.

The company will build the project in three phases and said it planned to commence construction this month. It will be the first facility on a three-data center campus CyrusOne is envisioning on its site in Allen, with 100MW of capacity total.

The Dallas-Fort Worth metro has seen high demand for data center capacity in recent years. Lots of new capacity came to the market recently and much more is under construction. Data center operators are building large in Dallas, and real estate brokers expect demand from hyper-scale cloud operators to pick up.

The first building on CyrusOne’s new campus will bring its total footprint in the Dallas market to 1.7 million square feet, the company said. CyrusOne is based in Dallas and has more data centers in Texas than anywhere else, with locations in Austin, Houston, and San Antonio markets.

As of the end of June, there were 10 active data center construction projects in the Dallas market, according to a market report by the commercial real estate firm CBRE.

RagingWire and TierPoint recently launched new data centers in the Dallas market. T5 Data Centers announced the launch of a 10.75MW facility in Plano, also north of Dallas, today.

In a project backed by its equity investor IPI Data Center Partners Management (manager of a fund co-sponsored by Iconiq Capital), T5 has also partnered with local developer Hillwood to build data centers for hyper-scale cloud operators in Hillwood’s master-planned AllianceTexas development in Fort Worth, home to a recently launched Facebook server farm.

Earlier this month, CyrusOne made a major push into the Chinese data center market, buying an 8 percent stake in the Chinese data center services heavyweight GDS Holdings and striking a sales partnership with the company.
