Internap Network Services (INAP) said Thursday that it will expand its Boston-area data center at 50 Inner Belt in Somerville, Mass. to add another 7,000 square feet of raised floor space. This is the second of Internap's three planned expansions in this facility, which Internap opened 18 months ago.

The expansion space is scheduled to come online in the second quarter of 2011, and will have expanded power density capacities of up to 10 kilowatts per rack. Internap's data center at 50 Inner Belt is supported by a power substation on the property.

The Boston-area expansion is Internap's fourth facility announcement in 2010. The company previously announced expansions in Seattle, Santa Clara and Houston that have added a total of 36,500 square feet of additional net sellable space.

"Internap's Colocation platform enables customers to take advantage of higher power density capabilities combined with our premium IP product offering," said Mike Higgins, SVP of data center services at Internap. "Offering our customers a comprehensive infrastructure solution is vital, and these expansions set the foundation for our continued growth."

Internap provides colocation, content delivery and network optimization services from a network footprint of about 250,000 square feet of space. Since taking over last year, CEO Eric Cooney has focused on an expansion of the company’s data centers, while it reduces its dependence upon space leased from third-party providers.
