Florida hosting firm Atlantic.net is suffering an extended data center outage this evening, which has taken the blog advertising services PayPerPost and SocialSpark offline, along with thousands of other customers. The problems began about 4:30 pm, and customers are being told that it is a networking issue. There are some details from customers emerging at Web Hosting Talk and a comments thread at Silicon Alley Insider.
Ted Murphy, the founder and CEO of IZEA, reports on his Twitter stream that the outage at Atlantic.net has taken out his company's PayPerPost and SocialSpark services. "Most of IZEA's properties are currently experiencing technical difficulties due to connectivity issues at our datacenter," read a message posted at both sites.
Some hosting industry observers may remember Atlantic.net for a bit part in one of the major web hosting collapses of 2003. Atlantic.net bought the remains of FeaturePrice, another Florida host which collapsed and shut its doors with little warning in April 2003. After off-and-on negotiations, Atlantic closed the deal, but not until many FeaturePrice customers had bolted for other providers.
