The University of Southampton recently launched the Iridis 3 supercomputer, one of the most powerful supercomputers in the UK. The system, which uses IBM iDataPlex rackmount servers and includes more than 8,000 cores, debuted at number 74 in the Nov. 2009 Top 500 list. The iDataPlex features a half-depth form factor that reduces the airflow required across the components, lowering the power while providing twice the number of servers in the same space as a standard 42U rack. This video from a UK news report provides a closer look at this supercomputer. It runs about 3 minutes, 30 seconds.
