AFCOM Potomac Launches Fifth Summer Internship Program
The program has been expanding every year since 2018.
AFCOM Potomac, the local chapter of the American data center industry association, has launched its fifth annual internship program.
This year, the organization is sponsoring eleven interns, who will spend the next ten weeks learning the tricks of the trade in the world's most densely populated data center market.
The program is growing rapidly at a time when the data center industry is suffering from the impact of a skills shortage: according to estimates by Uptime Institute, the industry needs to hire 300,000 full-time employees between 2019 and 2025, across as many as 232 distinct job roles.
“We strategically place students in a custom program specific to their interests in data centers and other industry firms that support their long-term career plans,” said Phil Baroody, national director of business development at Rosendin and AFCOM Potomac chapter secretary.
“Students work for a total of ten weeks, making multiple stops at various data centers and service providers all around Loudoun County. This provides the interns with a unique opportunity to learn real-world applications in areas of the industry they’re interested in. Whether it be mechanical engineering, architecture, real estate, IT, or facility operations.
“Sponsors are provided with hard-working, eager-to-learn students who will be soon entering the job market.”
The next generation
AFCOM Potomac brings together data center and IT professionals working in Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia.
Its internship program is sponsored by member organizations including Aligned Data Centers, CompuDynamics, CoreSite, CPG, CyrusOne, Iron Mountain, Primary Integration, Sabey Data Centers, Stack Infrastructure, SurePower, Trinity Construction, and Vantage Data Centers.
The program is also supported by the Northern Virginia Community College, which is providing grants to each of the students as they continue to help bridge the connection between academia and the data center industry.
The launch event will take place at the Lost Rhino Brewing in Ashburn, and is free to all data center industry personnel. You can register here.
