EDF Energy Focused on Data Center Efficiency

EDF Energy generates about 20 percent of the UK's electricity, and has set a goal of reducing its internal power use by 30 percent by 2012 as part of its commitment to sustainability. As part of that effort, the company recently consolidated IT equipment from three data centers into a single new facility using IBM's Modular Data Centre design. EDF Energy became one of the first companies to install a Turbocor free-cooling chiller, and designed its data halls using cold aisle containment to support high-density racks. The company estimates the consolidation project will produce savings in excess of £40 million over the life of the facility, as well as carbon emission reduction of around 1,000 tons per year.
