Video: eBay's Dean Nelson at the Google Summit

When you run an infrastructure at the scale eBay, the ripples from small savings and efficiency gains can go a long way. "We're looking at every cost for an application," said Dean Nelson, the director of Global Foundation Services at eBay, in a presentation at the recent Google Data Center Efficiency Summit. Nelson said "right-sizing" eBay’s infrastructure and matching hardware redundancy to applications will yield lower capital expenditures (CapEx) and operating expenses OpEx) going forward. That doesn’t mean fewer data centers, but gradually refining the existing footprint and implementing cutting-edge designs on new space. This video runs about 24 minutes.
