In this video from InsideHPC, Nicolas Dube, who is a data center efficiency strategist at HP and a member of the Green Grid, gives an overview of new sustainability metrics in addition to Power Usage Effectiveness or PUE. The industry will be moving toward looking at a bigger picture when it comes to measuring environmental impact, he says. The new measures of sustainability for data centers are Energy Reuse Effectiveness (ERE), which focuses on reclamation of heat, Water Usage Efficiency (WUE), which covers water usage in evaporative cooling and is site-specific, and Carbon Usage Effectiveness (CUE), which tracks total carbon impact including the carbon used by the electricity supplied to the data center. These measures of efficiency are explained on Green Grid's website and will be discussed in two workshops on energy efficiency at the SC11 conference next month. Tip of the hat to Rich Brueckner at InsideHPC for sending the video to us!
